Take Kirkland Road east to Kirkland, turning L at the road junction and following a bridleway past Kirkland Hall to join the Pennine Journey trail out onto the moorland up Kirkdale Beck. Trend R on the trail under High Cap, continuing uphill to the path junction with the Pennine Way at NY 684351 (5.4 miles/8.7km). Turn R onto the Pennine Way ascending to the trig point and shelter on the summit of Cross Fell. Follow the path down the other side to a path junction near Crowdundle Head. Turn R, leaving the Pennine Way and following the bridleway south-west downhill through Sturba Nook and down Wildboar Scar into Littledale. Follow the beck downstream but stay on the path following the funnel of open moor to the road in Blencarn (11 miles/17.7km). Turn R onto the road and go through the village, turning R at the junction and then L onto a footpath heading north-west across fields. Follow this back to Skirwith and the start.
