Follow Cove Road north through Malham village then R onto the Pennine Way, bearing L at Malham Cove up the steps then trend R across the limestone pavement to the head of the dry valley. Turn L and follow this valley up to a gate. Turn R and continue on the Pennine Way up a dry valley out onto the moorland beyond, to a road. Cross and follow the path to the Lings Plantation on the south-eastern shore of Malham Tarn (3.2 miles/5.1km). Turn R off the Pennine Way to reach a junction with a bridleway, turning R and following it south to the road end at Street Gate. Continue in the same direction bearing L at the next junction and heading away from the road into the valley above Goredale Scar. Follow the scrambly path carefully down the scar into the valley below. Follow the path through the campsite to Hawthorns Lane. Turn R onto the road and then L onto a footpath past Janet’s Foss waterfall and along Goredale Beck to the Pennine Way. Turn R onto this and follow it back to Malham Village.
