Follow the driveway towards the field centre but turn L onto the Pennine Way after the smiley barn on the L. Go through the gate and follow the Pennine Way north along the edges of fields to the road. Turn R onto the road then L on the track up to Tennant Gill Farm. Head to the L of the farm and uphill to the col, cairn and mine workings to the north-east of Fountains Fell (3.9 miles/6.3km). Turn L off the Pennine Way and follow the path marked by finger posts over the high point and down slightly to a wall. Turn L along the wall over Fountains Fell summit and south. The wall ends and you continue following the finger posts and the line of an old fence to the second wall that comes up from the valley on your L (6.1 miles/9.8km). Turn L and follow the wall downhill to a junction with a bridleway. Turn R on this and across the next two fields, turn L on Knowe Fell following the wall south-east back to the road. Turn R and follow it to a sharp L onto a track heading back to the start.
