BERGHAUS HYPER 100 EXTREM MEN’S WATERPROOF JACKET
£260 110g (men’s medium) view on the Berghaus website
The Hyper 100 is billed as the world’s lightest 3-layer mountain jacket. Made from Berghaus’ Hydroshell Elite Pro fabric, it’s waterproof and breathable with excellent durability. It was a Gold award winner in the 3-layer outer category at the 2017 ISPO trade show and gets great independent reviews across the board.
We’ve tested a few items from the MtnHaus range of Berghaus products over the last couple of years and have been consistently impressed with the performance and fit; these are garments designed specifically for mountain athletes, and that shines through in use.
The Hyper 100 fits brilliantly, with a slim, athletic cut and slightly stretchy, seam-free fabric which moves with you as you run. In use it feels very protective in wet and windy weather, with noticeably less condensation build-up on the inside than most other similar weight waterproofs. It is more expensive than almost all other light weight jackets, but the performance is more like that of a comparably-priced mountain jacket, which would normally be three or even four times its weight.
The jacket is minimalist but well-considered in its features, with a bonded, zipped inside pocket, very handy for keys and a card on shorter runs. The cuffs and hem are elasticated, but the fit is so good this is all the adjustment required and the results are extremely comfortable. The hood has a stiffened peak which is great for keeping the rain away from your face, however there’s no adjustment so it may struggle in really wild weather. Subtle but effective reflective details are a great addition.
The Hyper 100 is an outstanding jacket for racing in mountains and exposed places where top performance and light weight is essential. So far in longer-term testing the durability has proved to be excellent and the fabric feels like it should last for many years. Very few jackets are actually lighter than the Hyper 100 and those that are don’t offer the level of protection it gives. Price-wise it’s definitely at the top end, but it performs so well we think it’s worth it.
